I suppose it's tempting to read a biblical connection into the lettering that looks like EZR5. And that chapter is about building a temple with large stones. :(

But clearly the motivations of anyone fucked up enough to daub paint over a prehistoric monument, are a bit hazy for me to grasp, and it doesn't really matter where they got the inspiration does it. Most bible readers don't do feel the need to do such things.

When you see it in context, all 9 deliberately daubed (10! *hangs head in shame*)and just one with lettering on it, the biblical connection does look quite likely, especially if the last character is a 5. What else could it indicate? And of course almost no religious people would dream of doing this but on the other hand extreme religion and nutjobs often correspond. I hope it's something the police are looking at.

Thank you Nigel, I'm glad you think it's a sensible interpretation. Looking at it again I feel actually more convinced, because if you wade through to verse 16 it says "So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of the house of God in Jerusalem. From that day to the present it has been under construction but is not yet finished." And if you were so inclined, you could indeed see the few large stones of a stone circle as a temple unfinished. But why you'd then feel the need to splash paint all over them is anyone's guess.
So I reckon if you got the right house the combination of paint pots and bible study materials would give the culprit away. But how you'd find them in the first place is another matter.
