I once created a stone circle in a washing up bowl full of sand because I was spending the summer solstice in the stone-free Royan. It was aligned perfectly on the solstice sunrise and I even lit a very small fire in the middle and left some flowers in it to rot...

Margaret Curtis uses little models in trays of sand at her Callanish museum. Works rather well for demonstrating the way the various types of 'circle' were constructed, and the kids love to make their own circle while the boring grown-ups talk about stuff to do with the moon.
