"Appropriate" is the big issue isn't it. From what I recall of one partly felled stone the socket was startlingly shallow so to make a proper job you'd have to dig new, deeper sockets. I don't think that's appropriate as it's more reconstruction than restoration.

That is indeed the dilemma.
Did the builder do a 'bodge job' or was it shallow on purpose so to deliberately fall?
I guess we will never know?
