"is'nt there enough money in the kitty"
I suspect there is but that the official view is that other things have priority. So its not a "no money" problem its an "allocation choices" problem.
"And whilst I'm moaning, could'nt they put some of those stones into the vertical position"
Perhaps the Age of Stone Erection is over. We now know so much about what can be discovered by such an exercise that the exercise itself is dauntingly complicated. Mike Pitts' wish to raise a single Avebury stone seems to have dragged on and may well have been abandoned.
And then there's plain old bureaucracy, which is discouraging, to say the least. Elsewhere, we've been talking about a little project to put a model Obelisk in the Avebury South Circle for a few hours, just to see what it looks like. There could hardly be a more innocent and harmless exercise, yet the more we think about it the more bureaucratic implications and delays are looming.
