Stanton Drew circles are somewhat neglected and the jumble of stones that face you when entering the field could have been thrown by that bad-tempered giant who lives up on Maes Knoll. But actually we are living in the 21st C and here we have three stone circles, two with avenues down to the river, interesting archaeological facts shown by geo-fizz, and no information anywhere to tell you what you are looking at..shame...is intellectual knowledge so valuable that it can't be told to the general public or is'nt there enough money in the kitty to pay a draughtsman to map out what is before you.
And whilst I'm moaning, could'nt they put some of those stones into the vertical position - they were also brought some distance, probably along the river, and are just as great an achievement as Stonehenge or Avebury. The stones themselves are from different sources and show that they were chosen for different reasons other than being local.
It really is a pity that Stanton Drew is not given some TLC... it needs someone to campaign on its behalf ;)

"is'nt there enough money in the kitty"
I suspect there is but that the official view is that other things have priority. So its not a "no money" problem its an "allocation choices" problem.

"And whilst I'm moaning, could'nt they put some of those stones into the vertical position"

Perhaps the Age of Stone Erection is over. We now know so much about what can be discovered by such an exercise that the exercise itself is dauntingly complicated. Mike Pitts' wish to raise a single Avebury stone seems to have dragged on and may well have been abandoned.

And then there's plain old bureaucracy, which is discouraging, to say the least. Elsewhere, we've been talking about a little project to put a model Obelisk in the Avebury South Circle for a few hours, just to see what it looks like. There could hardly be a more innocent and harmless exercise, yet the more we think about it the more bureaucratic implications and delays are looming.

I'm sure that when I visited last year there were leaflets available as you went in through the gate which gave you soem quite detailed info.
