Drove past today with no time to stop. From the road it looked like one of the beautiful big chestnut trees has died...am I right or was I looking in the wrong place?

Presume you mean Stanton Drew, its sad when trees die but they do have a limited life span . Have you seen the one going down to the Swallowhead spring, it had so many crutches when I saw it in spring it looked in great pain ;) have a photo somewhere of the Avebury one.

Greetings Mr Hamhead. I was there mid-March this year and a very large tree was down in the near the centre the great circle, and had been left for some time as dead wood.
