Can any of you out there help me? This is not a TMA problem but.... I am looking for a Granite Column that was taken from the Cheesewring Quarry on Bodmin Moor in 1851 for the Great Exhibition. It is just over 9 meters high and is Iconic in style. According to Peter Staniers book "The Minions Moor" it is now standing in a field just outside Stroud.

Anybody seen it? have photos of it?

I am sure someone will have spotted it and thought it to be a standing stone.

Mr H

I have visited most sites around Stroud and not come accross this, my family still live near by
so I'll ask around.
Any more details on it's alleged location??

I've emailed a friend from Stroud to see what she says.

Iconic?...Ionic?....Scrolly bits on top?At 30ft tall,it's a bit difficult to loose! Happy hunting :)

What I'd like to know is:

Where exactly is the standing stone that was re-discovered in Stroud about 18 months ago and made it into the national newspapers?

baz

We found it!

Thanks everyone who offered advice

The 19th century granite column is situated in the grounds of Stanley Park which was the home of the Marling family from 1850-1952. The buildings were then converted to flats. You can just see the top of the column as you travel along the Ebley by-pass.

It is reported in a book "The Follies of Gloucestershire" by Headley, Gwyn & Wim Meulenkamp which you can see at http://www.touchwoodbooks.co.nz/tfollies.html . The book only says " ... and below Selsley, southwest of Stroud, is an Ionic column on a plinth standing anonymously in a field under the fantastic Stanley Park."

I have also been sent a photo of the monster...but its not ancient so you can't see it!
