Hitchhiking is probably a bit of a taboo activity now but I wonder if it wouldn’t suit some of us.
I used to hitch all round the country when I was a teenager. I still pull into services to check for hitchers, but they've totally disappeared. And I think this is largely due to the relative affordability of cars these days. I know loads of people who have cars now who could never have afforded them when I were a lad!

Yes, couple of young teenagers next-door-but-one have their own second-hand cars. The cars themselves are cheap enough but I do wonder how they manage to run them. I guess hitchhiking really is now only an option for people who, for one reason or another, don’t drive.
