There are still places where it’s possible to drive for an hour or so and never see another car. The freedom that gives us, and the pleasure of finding a beautiful spot to stop in, have a picnic and maybe walk even further into the countryside, is something not to be sniffed at.
Even better, there are still places where it's possible to walk for 8 hours or so and never see a car at all (or even another person). Definitely where I want to have my picnic! :)
Trouble is, you need a car to get to them ;)

No, you really, really don't. You can walk for hours across many miles of upland Mid- and South Wales without seeing a car or often any other people, starting from one bus stop and walking to another (or back). I can give you the links to the bus times if you'd like to try it, by way of research? :)
