Maybe because a formal road crossing with flashing lights, beeping and zig zags would be rather detrimental to the scheduled ancient monument?

I reckon the road crossings at Avebury just allow an opportunity for a bit of Darwinism. Surely people know to Stop, Look and Listen still don't they? :)

A lollypop lady would be an improvement :-)
Seriously though, can you imagine a child breaking away from its parents (happens all the time) or a school group and walking through one of the gates and walking out onto the road. I can just hear EH being asked why they allowed unguarded access to a dangerous road. Surely H&S are a bit slow on the case there!

Exactly, Darwinism in action. Their parents didn't teach them how to survive properly in the harsh environment, so they became extinct. Simple.
