Yes, at last, all things considered it’s now happening.

The present visitor ‘facilities’ will be removed, the A344 will be closed, and the monument given a little more space to itself in the landscape. Not perfect but it’s a start. The A303, with its accompanying distractions are still there but maybe, with a bit of pressure, something can be done to lessen those eventually.

My only gripe is the design of the Visitor Centre itself – the ‘vertical’ emphasis of the structure doesn’t seem to fit in very well with the soft undulating landscape. But hey, it’s more or less in the right place and can/will be replaced eventually.

Brilliant...the quicker it's finished the better as it will keep the masses away from the less exalted but often more interesting and FREE sites that you can visit and research in peace :-)

Well yes, but it’s still an iconic and something-to-be-proud-of place. It’s always going to attract visitors in their thousands, but at least now they’ll be getting a better experience for the time and money they spend there.

The new facilities are never going to satisfy everyone - though it’s probably not too late to suggest (insist?) on some things – like quiet (electric) vehicles from the Visitor Centre to the monument – no advertising on them and painted in a colour sympathetic to the landscape: that actually seems to be the intention if English Heritage’s Proposals for Stonehenge video is anything to go by.
