After a visit on Sat. 30th Aug, the word on the street from the guides is as follows:

Palisade site......Looks as if it's Bronze rather than Stone Age but a complete skeleton of a deer has been found. Neolithic and Iron Age artifacts also found.

Dressing site.....Both Sarsen and Bluestone fragments have been found together. Also shaping tools and hammerstones.

Avenue site.....The Atkinson trench (1950s) has been re-opened "cart tracks" along middle are now thought to be periglacial striations (?!). New trench alongside to be excavated this week. Posthole found in middle.
Turning point of the first dogleg has been found, no further extension N was found but the ditch on the W was doubled. Different orientation?

Cursus....Neolithic "Pit Circle" found at E end.

Riverside at Durrington Walls.....Ring ditch or barrow where the Avenue meets the River Avon.

All misinterpretations or mis-hearings are mine!

Open day next w/e.

Jim.

Thanks Jim

"Ring ditch or barrow where the Avenue meets the River Avon."

It's a bit wet down there.
How about a wharf Jim?

Curiously, I saw The Ruts play at Stonehenge! But 'striations' caused by human agency will look pretty similar to those caused by geologic action, one would think. A stone being dragged by people or a glacier might leave similar scars - perhaps? (Tell 'em you got it from a stonemason) ...
