mmm... interesting point, though perhaps we need the input of an engineer here. The fact that levers are involved in the rowing process suggests that we might be talking about leverage rather than direct pushing (or pulling :-)

Well you push down to lift and then push back to push forward.
Let us be perfectly clear about this, the stones were got to Stonehenge thanks to a load of people pushing towards Avebury. ;)
