There are international conventions that state that archaeology of all time periods is equally worthy of preservation. There are snippets on the web and elsewhere to suggest there are those that regard 18th and 19th century excavation tunnels as important parts of the archaeological record that must be studied and preserved.

My theory as to the cause of the international scandal that Silbury is that there are voices in EH who have succeeded in twisting the programme to take account of the tunnels.

Hard to believe that anyone could be so learned as to prejudice neolithic archaeology for the sake of the tunnels, but what other explanation can there be?

Silbury won't ever get fixed properly.
The new fence is a meare 3 1/2 ft high which has easy hand holds for anyone wishing to jump over.
2 new gates do not have hinges or locks (making it almost Druid accessable to all but the most infirm Druid)
There are 4 rabbit traps around the bottom (which the contractors tried to tell me were "Water sluices" Duh!) which do not work as they have heaped turf ontop of the shiny silver boxes to hide them.
Result? 4 new tunnels for rabbits to get onto silbury and infest the hill more.

Last chance to see!
The next period of wet weather we get will probably result in some sort of slump or collapse which EH will respond to slowly and do a very sloppy quick fix.

HA were offered the chance to be part of the Peer group review meeting which they turned down!
I'd love to be there but will never get an invite now.
