It's a repair in the sense that it's definitely not a repair and is compelling evidence of something that isn't a repair.

I forgot to mention that the phrase was actually "re-excavate and reprofile". Now I know what re-profile means, it means drill away the existing tunnel walls and make a bigger tunnel.

So the literal, unspun meaning of one of the few repair options put to them was "to drill a new tunnel right to the centre of Silbury for reasons unknown."

I've written suggesting this might cause a bit of a fuss, but their reply made no reference to it.

It sounds quite gobsmackingly pointless, and in my ignorance it sounds like a surefire way to create even more problems? Even if they poured a few tons of concrete down the hole one imagines it would do more good than drilling a hole through the base. But what do I know. Perhaps its part of their devious plan to frighten everyone into thinking that if they *do do something it'll be really mad - so the best thing to do is to Shut Up and put EH off doing anything at all..

They are trying to restore the lanscape to it's original form and the proposal is for the visitor centre to look like a stone wall so that it doesn't impinge on the vista (I bet the architect gets a nice fat fee for that idea). Why not hide it completely by building it into the reverse side of a small hill? Come to think of it, maybe "re-excavating reprofiling the tunnels" is a euphemism for turning Silbury Hill into the visitor centre. ;o)
