Part of the debate on that Time Team thing was that they are valued according to what a museum would pay for them as opposed to what a private collector would pay for them.
I'm sure one can guess where most finds end up if profit is the goal of the treasure hunter...

PAS now constantly monitor Ebay for suspected Treasure items so instances are a bit less - although proof is very hard to establish.

There's a strong school of thought amongst detectorists that the Viking treasure was found years ago and was only revealed, to get the reward, once the site had been denuded of the 7,000 easier to dispose-of artefacts but I couldn't possibly comment.
