Hi all,

I do a lot of running and this afternoon, on a cross country run, I came across an old iron age fort. I haven't seen any posts for it. Still being new to this site I didn't know if it was worth me posting my pictures of it on the website? It was impressive to me, if only for the size of it. There was a post on the fence telling me not to do any metal detecting and (I thought more unusually) any dowsing??? I know that's odd and unfortunately I am now in the north of england so I can't go back until next sunday.

PS.. can anyone recommend anything to see in N lincolnshire? I'm stuck in The lovely town of Scunthorpe until Thurs, with time to kill...

Thanks all.

>worth me posting my pictures of it on the website?

Yup, go for it.

Have you checked the tma map browser (link above between 'news' and 'contributors') for other sites in North Lincs? If there's nothing there, it might be worth checking the Magic map website (via the plug-ins on your user profile here on tma) and looking for ancient monuments, as sometimes a patch looks blank on the tma map browser, but only because no-one's added anything yet.

Happy hunting :)

Lincolnshire is not a great place for megaliths but it does have hillforts, barrows and a later turf maze. You might like to browse the Portal's Lincolnshire pages, most of which have not yet been photographed. See http://www.megalithic.co.uk/search.php?country=1&county=138

Do you mean the Charlton between Wantage and Ardington (there's a 'round hill' there) or do you mean Charlton-on-Otmoor? Can't think of any other Charltons in Oxon :-(

jacksprat, I take it you mean Charlton, just below Chippy?.
I have never seen a dowsers not allowed sign, might be one on here soon, if I dont listen .
I can easily meet you there, and I have some pocket, foldup dowsing rods, I wonder what they are scared of ?
Every dowser I have met, have been quiet , gentle people, will have to go there.
K

jacksprat, this Charlton, is very close by here,
I shall have a wander, if I can puzzle how to post pictures, I will, on here and the portal.
Maybe its about time I did, and also, put a dowsers point of view with them.
K.

jacksprat, went to the site today, couldnt find a sign though, so hope I was at the right place.
Went in after crossing the brook, well on left hand side, walked on and up to top of field, several shrubs, I believe they may be dogwoods, deep green leaves with dark purple berries.
The one that is split apart and the sheep seem to walk through the centre of, is at the centre of a polygon setup, with the remains of whatever was there built in a circle, in line with this, the energy flow down the hill goes to the well and a series of spirals are there.
Amazed that this village has no church?, found the small , lord of the manor one at Newbottle.
Kings Sutton makes up for there not been one at Charlton , have you seen the fabulous dragon, perched on the front corner of this church roof?, it is bang on a line, a dragon line?
Who was ST Cuthbert, apparently baptised in the font in here in 664 ad ?

The fort near Charlton (Rainsborough) appears to be just inside Northamptonshire, and is already on TMA here (added by baza):

jacksprat, managed to get back today, without my dogs this time, they like to round up sheep, and there is a lot of them here.
You can park at the farm called"camp farm".
there is a new parking area, with EH notice board there, it describes the place as dating from neolithic age, and tells of finds there from this period.
It is a fantastic place, couldnt find a no dowsing sign, so I did.
You could get wembley arena in this place, and it dowses as having two circles , in the centre area, the energy is circulating around both embankments, very powerfull place indeed, will be spending some time here, will map it out and follow the energy flows, hope it will take me to burial areas, long barrows, awkward onto private land, full of expensive looking horses, maybe you know this area well, would appreciate meeting up here ?
If I were a runner, around the top of the ditchs would do me, stunning place, similer to Avebury, but the stones are probably under the ditchs.
N 52 00.634 W001 14.046 , remembered to use the garvin, took some photos, will try to post on TMA.

Found a Geo 111 ( 1769 ) map today, about the oxford canal.
This shows Raynesbury camp, with a road leading to it, in a North Easterly direction, with three distinct outlets, from camp.
K.

jacksprat, if you go on EH partscape, they dont seem to list this place , which is odd, as they have a board up at the car park.
I went to northants, newbottle, church.
Then if you click at the side of the aireal photo, you can work your way across country, as a runner, you should be able to recognise where you are.
When you get to rainsboro, there are strange markings in the field where the ponds are.
It is a good site to click across country, easy to get lost, but they seem to have photo,d at a good time, when the fields have been ploughed.
