Of course, he might have copied it from wikipedia. In which case you're on a hiding to nothing :)

But even if it is a new idea, perhaps it's worth trying out I guess

Cheers Rhiannon, I'll check this out. There was - briefly - another reply to this thread that mentioned it might be a (very) modern appropriation, but the reply was taken down before I could read it on the site.

I wanted the source only to corroborate a rhyming phrase I'm using on a print about the tale, but I'm happy if it's quite a modern bit of folklore - they all have to start somewhere.
