I really wouldn't express an opinion on this one anyway. As you say I haven't been there and looking at it I don't think I'd make the effort to do so :-).

My choice of RA was actually a bad example. As PeterH says elsewhere how many standing stones have been properly dated? Saying that, one about a mile down the road from my house was always thought to be a scratching stone, but when they moved it they found an urn at its base. So even the ones thought by the experts to be modern can prove to be old.

all stones are old + its standing = ancient standing stone..

Yes and it has always seemed a bit of a lottery that we can only date standing stones if we find any pots or stuff beneath 'em. Otherwise - how can we be certain that a SS is prehistoric and not a modern scratching post - particularly in treeless landscapes?
