Hi Dave

< Is this the same stone (near the Rangers office) I sent you a pic of, a coupla years back? >

I think so - though I somehow managed to lose the image you sent me. It's right near the bottom of the park (though don't know about any ranger's office). A friend of mine moved to just round the corner from the park and mentioned there being several possible standing stones - so I went along to check it out. Turns out to coincide with its position on an early OS-map of the region, though I aint checked any out any extra literary records on the old stone. There's gotta be summat said of it somewhere in Leeds library.

Aye, near the beck, at the bottom of the park, below the car park by the Ranger's office.
My pics aren't as good as Josie's anyway! :-D

I couldn't find any trace of it on the 1850-something O.S. map. Is there an older one for that area?

I asked an old bloke who's written several local history booklets (can't recall his name atm) about it. He said there were some old gate posts and rubbing posts in the park. This stone doesn't look like a gate post. I don't remember seeing any trace of holes or hinges.

Cheers
