even though the the near by fort is Iron age it would suggest that the peat disappeared quite quickly ,and the nearby marked stones (like the sinking one in the embankment)would have also been under a good few feet of peat too ,unless they weren't contemporary.

In my opinion, for worrits worth, this stone definitely looks like it's had the hand of man (or woman!) turned to it. I can see why the folklore tells it to have been a cresset stone - though the bullaun-effect hit me straight away aswell. Someone tell them Canmore doods to reconsider...!
