I think the nearest non-sedimentary stones near these Northumberland ones (those with the grooves) is:

No grooves. Similarly the ones up the other end of the county, such as the Battle Stone near Yeavering, and the stones of Hethpool, are igneous, and have no grooves.

The cobbles at the Mare and Foal were put there by the county archaeos a few years back - Caroline probably - and is an anti erosion measure. There's remains of what might have been a cairn (1 upright stone, many lying stones) about three hundred metres to the east of the Mare and Foal.
