Using a piece of flint and a fine abrasive I got bored before I'd made even a mark on it.
One thing I did discover though,, in no time at all the surface of the sarsen became fantastically smooth - a glistening glass-like reflective finish, not far off polished marble. So I figure, maybe, the original Stonehenge shimmered and glistened magically...

I posted RockNicker's picture of Duddo stone circle because I thought that was limestone - but it's sandstone like the rest. Burl's quote for the usual material used to construct stone rows 'glacial erratics'. I know of no circles or menhirs that are 'granitic'. A better option is probably to look for a section of rock with these features that has been out of the elements for a large part of the last four thousand years or so.

Im having a bit of a faff about with this kind of thing at the mo, I'll let you know if there's anything to report.
