Geoffrey Grigson is cool. His children's book 'Looking and Finding' should be on every mini modern antiquarian's bookshelf. Promotes an interest in everything from prehistoric sites and weird inscriptions on things to poetry and animal tracks and signs, buildings, local history etc etc

Not come across that one...

He was born about three miles away from where I live (his sister in law lives just down the road) I class his book "Freedom of the Parish" as one of the best ever. It is a book of his childhood memories of walking around the countryside , searching for birds eggs, fishing at night in the local river, hunting for bronze age treasures, exploring disused water mills. It tells of a time when no one said "get off my land" and children could just go off for the day and no one started to worry if they did not return for lunch.

How many kids toady would spend an afternoon searching for one single type of flower, could tell the difference between a sparrows nest and a robins nest?

The book I am rteading "gardenage" also has a chapter on woad and the political reasons why it died (sorry) out as a crop. Have not got that far yet...
