One of the main problems in photographing Castlerigg is that it's setting is so photogenic, getting there when there aren't loads of other people trying to do the same thing, means visiting either very early, or in crap weather ;-)

There's a particularly difficult picture to take at Castlerigg, of the stone with the spiral carving. If the light isn't just right, it can't be seen at all. I've never seen it in the real myself, and have only seen one photo of it.

As far as I'm aware, no-one has posted a pic of the spiral here.
Though I would hope if I'm wrong, I'd be suitably harrangued.

Try just before sunset at around the summer solstice. The tiny cupmarks at the Knar show up best then - when you see it in action you think 'these were carved as people sat watching the sunset'. (Maybe).

You make a valid point. Perhaps the setting is TOO photogenic? Perhaps because of this it no longer holds any privacy; any sense of isolation and ancient separateness. A pity, really. I believe this is why, every time I visit an ancient place, I tell myself that I must use my imagination to truly feel how the place WAS. We need to erase the crowds of people and any other anachronisms.
