What bothers me is whether that stone is in it's original position, and if anyone knows for sure how long it's been there. That whole area around the pond has been heavily landscaped and changed over the last decade or two. Does anyone have any proof of it's provenance?

We've read quite a few history-of-the-area thingies over the years and never heard it mentioned before.
