A question which maybe VBB will be clued up on but of course open to all.
When the modern-day B4003 running from the A4 to the southern entrance of Avebury's Great Circle was constructed why did it not avoid the West Kennet Avenue at the Avebury end instead of running through the bend in it? I know the road is believed to have run across the Avenue at the southern end as well but I suppose it had to cross it at some point but why where the stones, or known line of the stones, were evident at the time (or were they?)
Simple answer is it adopted what was an established route. There are some photos showing bits of it before tarmac. And yes some stones were evident.
Yes I already knew that but I would have thought some consideration would have been given to it before it became tarmaced and a metalled road.
The campaign to 'save' Avebury didn't take off until 1937.

I think our posts just crossed - have just said something similar using more words. 1937 would correspond with Alexander Keiller's work.

Oh, I dunno, Stukeley tried (though granted it was hardly a ‘campaign’) and there were probably others.

Meanwhile, the buying, selling, plundering and disrespect goes on...
