I was reading Aubrey Burl's 'Prehistoric Avebury' yesterday. He mentions about how the west kennet avenue went from the sanctuary down to the main Avebury circle. Of course as you get nearer the sanctuary the stones have been nicked for the local houses over the years. But, he says, there are four stones remaining. Two are standing and two are fallen, and they are behind a hedge at the foot of the hill. "Modern steps from the road provide access to the sarsens, which are often overgrown in summertime."
I hadn't heard about these before. Has anyone seen them?
