I meant the technique of open area archaeology, when appropriate, ie Danebury & Crickley Hill.

Strangely, Tarmac aren't too keen on open area archaeology. Too much risk of finding stuff.
A 2% trenching strategy is what they've agreed with North Yorkshire County Council. Much better than 6-10% plus that the textbooks and EH recommend.
