Very good question. The Irish 'bullaun stones' are mainly associated with wells or streams, but not always. I know of many hilltop ones. They are nearly always associated with Brigid related sites. Some say they are just for grinding. Many were re-used to fonts in Early churches and the water from a lot (no matter where they are) are still believed to cure ailments (mainly warts).

This stone was on the very peak of a large hill in a very commanding position when i get home tonight i will post a better photo of it.
If your ever in the area i will gladly show you exactly where the stone is.
