Great article, but his main theme - that we should trust the locals not to vandalise it - is idealistic and wrong IMO. He seems to think it was an insult to "the public" to have buried it, but it was actually a response to a tiny section of the public.

There's something about prostrate stones that makes them particularly open to attack. He should go and have a look at Nine Ladies.

I am afraid that in my opinion the best thing to do is exactly what they plan, make an exact replica and keep the original protected. Given there are a small minority of morons in every community = the larger the nearby population the larger the number of morons = the greater the chance of the stone being abused. Places such as Kilmartin can get away with leaving rock art exposed as it is a much more rural spot with a much lower population. Therefore much less likely to be abused. I know this is far from ideal but at least the stone will remain protected until (hopefully) at some point in the future the stone can be revealed in all its glory without the fear of damage? Just my opinion :)
