Ah you are mixing up the Drax tunnel (1777) from the top to the center that had the spoil dumped over the edge with the Merewether tunnel from the bottom between the pathways to the center with various side tunnels which was enlarged so that the local Gentry could walk along its length to the center of Silbury without getting their hats dirty!
