Why would Merewether want to haul all that spoil up the road when he could have dumped it anywhere around Silbury? Can't see the sense in it - it's not as if he was 'environmentally sensitive'. What would be the point in going to that sort of trouble?

I'm sure someone at HA can calulate the amount of material taken out. It was a LOT.
Where was it put? Maybe they dug another tunnel and put it in there!

Yes - that was the point I was going to make. Why cart the spoil all that way?
