A little of both on resurrecting this old chestnut ;-) And while genuinely not wanting to distract credit from Pete in bringing the Great Bank to our attention, let's not forget the name Silbaby is not popular with some of us here. In fact the TMA Eds were considering at the end of November 2004, "...changing the name... to 'The Great Bank' (as it is named in the map that Pete G posted). Silbaby will then be added as an 'alternate' name to the site."*

That thread got pretty heated and pretty personal and I really don't want to go there again. It's just that I know from bitter personal experience that it's really, really hard to get the 'authorities' to take new ideas/discoveries seriously and it just doesn't help, when dealing with them, to use names of the 'endearing' kind (no disrespect to Pete or the name Silbaby). It's just that the authorities have reputations to consider (we don't) and they're much more comfortable with academic sounding stuff like The Great (Girt) Bank or Silbury Minor - we might not like it but it's how they play the game, and the most important thing for us is to get the site properly looked at and then protected if it turns out to be the real thing.

Actualy I was mildly surpised to find that All the archaeologists I talked to about 'The Site' really like the name Silbaby!
IF it is ever shown to be 'ancient' then I'm sure it will be classed as 'Mound ra4572845/6furg' or whatever.
If it turns out to be rubbish then it will be the Silbaby dump.
The Name is not the issue, the Mound is.

Thought someone later discovered the Girt/Great Bank was summat else?
