OK .. Why's it called the 'Football Cairn' then?

Was there an old game held hereabouts?

Damn! Caught on the hop I am.
There is an explanation, I'm sure I remember reading something about it. Not got it on me work machine though. I'm pretty sure it wasn't anything to do with kicking things about, rather a corruption of some old name.

I am still no damn nearer to any ideas. I can't find anything written, other than it used to be 'Ball Cairn'. But now it's bugging me.
