Thanks stonegloves - you are correct, it does look like a waterboatman (googled that first) and also whilst they don't look like they can fly, they apparently do.

A very interesting link also to the crop circles. I have been interested in the art/nature/whatever about crop circles for a few years now and overlooked this one on lucy pringle's page just moments before!

I guess I need to know when Waterboatmen fly to lay their eggs (they apparently fly to lay their eggs in other fields)

The great waterboatmen are on the wing when the temperature's above about 20C, I would guess. They can give a hefty bite, too, if cornered, very similar to a clegg (horsefly). Crop Circles are featured on Sunday night's CountryFile, it would seem. (It's all connected!)
