Over the past years there have been fairly frequent calls for rerouting the heavy goods vehicles away from Chipping Norton. This has now come up again, and unfortunately it would mean the road past the Stone circle would have to be widened with all the unfortunate consequences that would entail. There is to be a public meeting on Saturday to discuss the alternative plans that have been proposed.

Chipping Norton air quality consultation

The next consultation day for the above draft Action Plan will be on Saturday, 1 March, 10am to 2pm at the Town Hall, Chipping Norton.

Heritage Action opposes the widening of the road because it would have a destructive effect on the stones and the extra noise would totally destroy the ambience of the place.

I think there are good reasons why this proposal is going to be well worthy of a fuss.

Apart from the obvious ambience and noise problems there are two more possible dangers -

Vibration. Studies have been done at Stonehenge suggesting this can be a major hazard if the source is within 40 metres, which this would be.

Lichens. Britain's oldest is on one of the stones. Lorries diverted along there are bound to worsen air quality and lichens are notorious for upping and dying if there's even the slightest worsening of it, so....

who's going to the meeting, what a mad idea to widen that road the thought of it makes me want to cry! why on earth do they even propose such a stupid idea - where can i get info on any campaigns to stop this ridiculous proposal.
