London Stone

Any news?

Does anyone know what's happened to the London Stone? Last we heard on these pages the building next to it was going to be replaced, and no-one could find out what would happen to the stone. Is it safe? It would be such an ignominious end if it just got lost after all this time.

No idea I'm afraid, but I'll try to get down there one lunchtime next week and see what's going on...

It was still there on Friday and no visible sign of any work taking place.

I have been in vague contact in the past with a bloke at The Property Merchant Group (the ppl who own 111 cannon street) & have just emailed him again to find out the latest.

Last time I had contact (about 8 months ago) he assured me The Stone would be moved in conjunction with the relevant authorities & would presumably be stored at the Museum of London in the interim.

All of which said on the proviso he probably thinks I'm some raving looney (see nigelswifts thread :).

I contacted the Museum of London and received this helpful reply today:

"You enquired about the London Stone. The building that holds the stone is due for redevelopment. While this is happening the stone will be displayed temporarily at the Museum of London. It will then return to an enhanced display in its original location. I have no exact timescale for this process at present. So rest assured that it is being well looked after and its situation will improve.
