Hi SBP,

Have you ever lived on Lewis? The locals (see my previous rant), the ones without PCs and/or a political/status axe to grind wont give a monkeys about a wind farm .... but just try hanging out your washing on the Sabbath!!

also, re:noise from wind farm turbines

Have you ever lived on Lewis?

The wind howls 24hrs 365 days a year.

As I said previously, there is so much real global danger out there I think that you are wasting your angst on a trivia.

Yes, there's a whole slew of endangered sites in SW Northumberland to be taken care of. There the birds of prey are shot and poisoned, rather than blended, and potential mills have been discouraged because of the nuisance value to jet pilots practising their bombing (allegedly).

The ungainly steel towers are only a stop gap until better technology is developed - off-shore wind eg, and wave energy and, mainly, conservation and reduction of demand. I produce the same carbon dioxide as the average Egyptian person (2t./yr.), a quarter of your's, and so claim the moral high ground in this context.

There are plenty of people using the loss of visual amenity argument over the Sleeping Goddess typography but precious fewd and to photograph it (when it happens).

I know what you're saying, and to a certain extent if they want to live with the wind turbines and the destruction to the environment around them, then okay......BUT its where they want to site these. As I said with a link from the RSPB, who are normally in favour of wind farms, the siting is wrong.

If local folk think they're gonna make some money, then they need to check their facts - other locals' sites show these promises often turn up empty, ie skilled labour imported, turbines and such built elsewhere.......and a poll suggests a 25% drop in tourists visiting the island (from http://www.mwtlewis.org.uk/ I think).

Others who already live with the things (in the Lakes and Dorset) say the noise becomes a health problem - I've only heard them for a short time, and I think it's horrible.

I think we're gonna have to visit Lewis sooner rather than later....

I agree that there are larger concerns out there, when people still die from lack of food and water; but I can't ignore the little things when they're pointed out to me :-). If I hadn't read this thread I'd be none the wiser about the pro's and con's of wind farms!!
