I was at the Long Man today.

The sheer ignorance displayed by those taking part (80 of them) was breathtaking. They have been told, it seems, that the site is just made of concrete blocks and that they have permission, so that’s okay. After all if the mighty TV says it’s alright then it must be yes? One of the crew actually said to me “It’s good television though isn’t it?”

The Sussex Archaeological Society have given permission for this fiasco, seemingly having been told that they will not be going on the figure itself. My pictures tell another story.

There is still time to get this decision reversed for the actual filming tomorrow. PLEASE get down there if you can for 10 o’clock. Bring something noisy and a kite (Not to get in the way of the camera shots from down the hill you understand, just for relaxation).

This is a special site for Pagans. It is also a very sensitive archaeological site. What they are doing sets an awful example to everyone who is not aware of the nature of this site. Giving permission is an appalling misjudgement on the part of the owners and for the moment the Pagan community are the true custodians of the site.

My email last night, suitably indignant..... I cannot believe that an Archaeological Society could sink to such a low point as to 'hire out' or give permission for the Long Man of Wilmington site to be used for cheapskate shows. Can anyone take your society as a serious one or is the 'fun' element of a sellout more profitable?
I believe that such a decision could still be reversed, and trust that you will reconsider such a foolish act....

Its a worrying trend when you consider the trash that tv produces nowadays just to get the punters in, what other parts of heritage is up for trashing? Don't answer that LS and Nigel... or anyone else by the way, just write an email...
