Imbedded paganism

close

Slightly off topic, but the church at Tockenham very near to above has a "genii loci" stone stature in the wall by the porch. Its a roman healing god. The church also has pieces of wood, (bet its yew) imbedded in the stonework as well.

And, completely off topic, also parts of Bradenstoke Abbey near Lyneham, was bought and shipped over to America by the newspaper magnate Hearst in the 1940s, to be part of a hotel he was building. Needless to say the stones are still in boxes - repatriation is needed.

Yes, was there years ago after a tip-off by the vicar of Clyffe Pypard - well worth a visit. Didn't know about the wood in the stonework though, and didn't check for sarsens under the buttresses. Anyone going to Tockenham via Clyffe Pypard might want check out the church there; more sarsens under the buttresses than any other church I been to - there's a pic of one of them here -
