Notgrove was covered over simply because it was a popular long barrow and someone worried that visitors would damage it.

I visited nearby Nympsfield a couple of months ago, there were various bits of loose stonework lying on the grass there:

Pics posted here. It's a shame, but limestone is so much more fragile than, say, granite. Cornish sites can stand exposed for centuries without any damage, but these limestone-constructed long barrow chambers are less permanent once they're out in the elements.
