Ignorance

Are there any examples where bodies were buried inside the mound but not in chambers, the chambers being preserved for the chief etc ?

on a slightly different subject but one that ties in...when were the earliest recorded excavations of long barrows carried out? it is just that i found reference to the the Stipple Stones henge on Bodmin Moor today that dates back to QE I.

Some one said earlier that very little bone is found in the chambers...how do we know they were not robbed of anything of "value" prior to modern times?

Or robbed out by Badgers/Foxes?

robbed of anything of "value" prior to modern times--

According to Burl, A Dr.Toope digging up human bones near the Sanctuary in 1678 wanted to turn them into a "noble medicine that relieved many of my distressed neighbours", nice bonemeal mash. Been sprinkling bonemeal on the garden this week, hopefully it was animal....
And another, a John Thurnam, in 1855, probed into Lanhill, lugbury, West Kennet and Adams Grave, discovering (all longbarrows) human skeletons whose skulls had been split open.. there again he was medical supt. to the mental asylum at Devizes!
