I know what a bield is and have repaired one. It was the first field furniture I worked on and that would be about '86. The word is generally used to indicate a line of fence or stone wall strung out with the intention of gathering sheep. They were herded together and driven at the bield which directed them into a temporary enclosure of hurdles behind, for shearing or dosing or splitting the lambs off. Like a funnel.

The closest I can recall to a cross temple is a Four-poster circle with two outlying 'portals'. We've certainly been into the symbolism of four for a long time. Do I really have to go to Yorkshire ?
