Sad. It illustrates a truth about heritage protection that no-one likes to admit - it's not what the law says but what those responsible actually DO (or don't).
The French have it wrong too. Metal detecting there is entirely illegal yet they have more of them than us. Pourquoi? Because the law says only metal detecting for historic artefacts is illegal. So every week thousands of people are out on archaeological sites, every one of them searching for their lost car keys....

Someone told me a metal-detecting horror story just before Christmas - the milden jewel or something. Luckily neither Bolton nor my Northumberland finds has seen metal detectors yet. There's the other Kirkhaugh ear ring to find, of course, and that'll be the first local site to expect hooligans. I'm just repairing a 40 channel CB radio that I hope will pick up the gamekeepers plottings and record it via a minidisc. My Kodachromes of inside a grouse shoot are at Dwayne's in Parsons. I've never seen a photo of a grouse shoot and I'm hoping one or two of them will be useful. I've also just bought some 16mm cine film for this coming summer, Kodachrome again. Maybe restorate another small sheepfold.
