got an e-mail back today from the Assistant Inspector of Ancient Monuments and basically it said that because the stone wasn't scheduled, there was nothing they could do to stop its destruction, and because it's almost destroyed, they can't schedule it!

Cheers
Andy

The Megalithic sites of Perthshire:

I would never normally suggest anything like this, but if the stone is (a) unprotected (b) in danger of destruction and (c) small enough, what about the posssibility of removing it until it can be safeguarded?

I can hardly believe I'm typing that, so by all means shoot me down in flames over this suggestion. But those tyre-tracks look unpleasantly close.

IF the site can be returned to anything like a presentable state, then at least there will be SOMETHING to return there, if only as a badge of shame to future generations.

What would the original builders want you to do? Because if no one else will protect what they created, then you have effectively taken their place for the moment.

Hiya Andy,
Well that's just gash ain't it? What feckin use is that reply?!!!
Cursuswalker does have a point, though I guess we shouldn't encourage the removal of stones from their original sites unless absolutely necessary as a completely last resort in order to save them. How about a job for HA? Is there a local archaeology group there that you could alert to the plight?
Cheers,
Martin

Have a word with ScottY - he's not bad at relocating things... Unfortunately I'm away again till mid-Feb otherwise would have offered the services of the BRB plus trailer. Worth bearing in mind though if it's still there when I get back.
