Mystery stones

close

Hi there RG!

I've been contemplating another trip down south (Wales I mean) and I'm intrigued by your photo of the two stones at Meini Gwyr.

Do you have a grid reference for these? I know there's a stone pair at SN141263, but I'm not sure if these are they. Can you help?

Kammer,

The NGR for Meini Gwyr is SN142267 and there is a bit of parking opposite the circle and there is a fading noticeboard.

This site is part of the Glandy Cross complex and contains many sites (single stones, barrows, eathworks, kerb cairn etc) so good return on petrol invested. The other stone pair is Yr Allor (although they could have been a cove and Burl reckons they could have been a three-some) is at SN142266 (see http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=2203) and antiquarians claim there was once a circle in the same field - some suspect stones remain.

There are many standing stones such as Capel Nebo (http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=4266), those at Menhir Farm (http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=4363). There is an earthwork and kerb circle at Cwm Garw (both marked on the map).

If you get the chance to go to the bookshop in Newport consider purchasing the excellent Figgis 'Prehistoric Preseli' guidebook and the equally excellent Children & Nash book on the Neolithic sites of the area (and see the stoney postcards).

A word of caution - a postcard-toting woman is known to roam this area - she got RG ;-).

Hope this is of use.
