Sorry but I think your Winklebury is in Hampshire (SU 614 529) but mine is in Wiltshire.
There's no need for any silly remarks by the way. Yours looks more interesting as there's a school right inside it. Not everyone gets to go to school inside a fort.

Whoops! I was down Basingstoke way at the weekend and when I saw the item, I thought "damn, missed one!"

I just searched for winklebury and didn't think to check the location... I'll remove the item now...

Dear Rhiannon,

I'm new to this, so apologies all round if this message comes up - as I suspect it will - in quite the wrong place. I'm in fact chasing a ref you gave in another posting on Ordnance Survey benchmarks at Avebury - I have found a photograph from the early 1940s of a stone at Avebury with a benchmark apparently painted onto it. Any chance you could let me know the ref for the Wiltshire Archaeological Magazine bit you quoted?
