Just looking at the TMA posts for this one. Couldn't help but laugh at the plethora of photos of a bench mark, especially the idea that it could be a carving almost contemporary with a Bronze Age circle.

You'll be very excited to learn that there is an online database of benchmarks and an activity known as "benchmarking". The OS equivalent of trainspotting, presumably.

I was one of those, as I'm sure you're aware! :) It was the first time I'd encountered a bench mark (2003! What can I say? I was a late starter) - learned soon after what it was. As, I'm sure, did other people here. :)

If this is trie about the stone being dragged away, then what the fuck's going on these days??? Sorry state of affairs...

This is terrible - you read stories of monuments being damaged or destroyed 30 odd years ago and think surely that couldn't happen nowadays and then 2 in one month!

went there a couple of years ago and was great fun trying to find the stones and determine where they stood (or didn't!) in relation to each other with the sun shining through the trees. Real shame.

It's never too late to take up benchmarking though. I'm sure it's very exciting.

As to the serious bit, yes, what the fuck is going on? After the Priddy news, it seems that wanton damage is the theme at the moment.
