In mountaineering /hill walking circles there has been an ongoing debate concerning the building of wee cairns to mark routes to help those lost in poor visibility .There is no political , religious or philosophical side in the argument merely should we impose man made signs/signifiers on an enviroment that is being used ,among other reasons , to escape from those . The debate here , i believe is similar . As a "leave the place as you found it and don't impose your views , clutter on it " person , i find any symbol left at an ancient site distracting whether it is culturally offensive or otherwise , like tabla bashers etc (why are they always so awful ?) why don't they do it in their own space . One last mini rant , another phenomenon that has appeared in the last couple of decades is memorial plaques on remote hill tops etc. This is exactly the same form of selfishness .
